When I work for State of Illinois, sometimes we would wreck those rural mailboxes alongside the road when plowing snow.

If that happened, then we had to go out and put up a new one. And it did happen. ;)

Nope. All that happened years ago.

One time I was out on the west end near the Fox River in East Dundee. I was making a left turn to go north on Rt 25 at Rt 68. There was a big doe grazing alongside the road. The strobe lights must have spooked her. She ran right in front of me and I clipped her with the snow plow. She skidded into the paved median. By the time I turned around and got back there she had her last gasp and was dead.

So I called the foreman, Joe, on radio and told him what happened. When he got there he said, "Are you sure she's dead? I don't want to get kicked." I said, "Yeah look. Her eyes are open. They always die with their eyes open."

We threw her up on tailgate of pick up and drove about a quarter mile to where the entrance to the gravel pit was. I pulled her off in a clean bank of snow and cut off the hind quarters.

I ran the rest of the night with the heater off and took them home and aged them in the fridge for a few days. Then I gave one to the neighbor. He cooked me up a plate of stew and fed his family too.

The other I brought into the yard. We had a guy there who used to be a butcher. He said it was perfect so we cut it up and fried it up on the stove.

Another time I was heading northbound on Rt 31 up north into Algonquin. There was a corn field on left. A bunch of shadows went between me and oncoming traffic. It was a herd of deer. They were feeding in the corn field and went down to the river to water.

Out where I live now, a buddy's wife got a bunch of inheritance from her grandparents. They both got Harley motorcycles. One time she was riding with her 28-year old daughter on the back. A deer walked out in front of them. Mom had to lay the bike down. Her daughter gott hurt pretty bad. There are loads of deer out here too.

A few years back a Black Bear got in town all the way down to 6th St. He must have been raiding trash cans. But an older friend had two dogs and could not get them in the house. He found out the bear was out there. The police and fire departments chased him out the north end of town. Bears don't know what flashing lights and sirens are so they run.

This was a tale of various wildlife encounters that I can recall. The older ones from working on state highways are the lucky ones because the meningitis wiped out so much of my memories. ;)

Remember, none of this is real and it then makes more sense when you realize money can literally buy you anything in America.
