These student loans are real killers.
I had a student loan for an online course which I never completed. That was long ago. I think I made some payments on an old credit card but that card was cancelled long ago. Some collection agency picked up that debt and ended up writing it off rather than spending money on lawyers to take it to court. ;)

We cannot hang student loans around the tax payers necks.

The guy should just rearrange his affairs so the debt is uncollectable and stop paying it. He's a lawyer, afterall so it shouldn't be too hard.

That was a government sponsored program. They offered it and I accepted. The outcome was never in question. I just could not keep up with the demanding schedule.
It had to do with learning computer repairs for removing things like Spyware and Ransomware.
I had some jackass put Ransomware on my old HP computer. The local technician removed it 100%. He told me, "Even if you paid them, there is no way to know if they would remove it completely."
That jerk wanted $650. He had a poor mark since I did not have that kind of cash.
He called me afterward and said, "I have your password."
I said, "YOU put that crap on my machine. Don't EVER call me again."
The tech removed it all for $40 and it was money well spent. ;)

Most students could not qualify for college if colleges had the education and IQ requirements that people capable of being managers, engineers, attorneys, and doctors should have.
Average IQ 18-year-old students enter college with the mindset of live today with no thought of tomorrow. Therefore, college is 4 or more years of partying, fucking, taking the easiest course they can enroll in and students loans pay for it. Then they graduate or leave college and it is no longer partying and having fun. Instead, it is the tomorrow they gave no thought to. Why should I pay the debts they incurred to fuck and party?
I believe the best solution for future college students is for college loans to be dischargeable through bankruptcy with no government guarantee. Then lenders would be careful before making loans and, without all the loans, colleges would be forced to greatly reduce tuition and to lay off 3/4th of the administrators.

Excellent. Go to the head of the class.
Another benefit of not having all the loans is that most of the 90% of the people who go to college but should not would not, notwithstanding the lower tuition.

That is so people like those students at Delta Tau Chi house in Faber College can take up to six years out of their lives to muddle thru the whole scheme of things trying stay out of the draft with student exemptions. ;)

Paging Dr. Lod...
$50 per semester!? I paid 30 times that in the late 70's. And it's probably 150 times that now.

As an added "way-back" bonus, as a freshman, I lived in an "approved" off-campus dorm with weekly maid service and two home-cooked meals weekdays, for $65/month.
