That is true. But those tax returns are voluntary.
When I was driving trucks I never filed a tax return.
I had two IRS liens on me over in the town I lived in when I was driving trucks. I called over to the Recorders office. They told me, "Send us a check for $4 and a SASE and we will send copies."
I had these credit repairs lawyers in Salt Lake City, Lexington Law, challenge the IRS. They could not prove I owed the tax and were forced to withdraw the liens.
My Credit Karma used to say "2" for Public filings. Now it says "0". The proof is in the pudding. ;)

I was at one time a member of Save-A-Patriot Fellowship. (SAPF)
If you were a member and lost property, all you needed was to show the loss and you would be reimbursed in full from among the membership.
I would get one or two envelopes a month for $15 to $25. Sometimes none at all. With this method there was no fear of loss. ;)

From what I am able to recall, the cost of membership was $99 per year. Since I was trucking back then and making some tall cash I could afford that and the monthly assessments to reimburse members who lost property.
I even had a credit card and was able to pay it off every month.
The absolute best trucking job I had was my first in Missouri. It was a dedicated run to Florida that paid $750 a week in CASH!
The old man who owned that outfit was likely making enough that he was covering both ends of Social Security tax. We also had cash in reserve to pay for fuel since the truck stops gave 5 cents per gallon discount when you paid in cash. There were no credit card charges.
When we left Flying J in Lake Park, GA, we would put on as much fuel as possible since the excise in Florida was so high. They would just settle up quarterly when they paid IFTA taxes. But once in a while we would have to stop and put on $50 worth just to get out of the state.
I was out there a couple of times pumping injectors when it would suck some air. One time my co-driver ran out right in the middle of an intersection. A cop pulled up. He said to the cop, "What do you want me to do? It's out of fuel." We had to call for a service truck to bring out fuel. That cost extra. :-/

Look what a plague taxes are, speshly at the gas pump. Here in SC they're something like 45% of the pump price -- and all for govts that make little legit use of the moola.
The more money there is in one place the more the corruption, so it seems.

It was diesel. I think you know the difference between a diesel and gas engine.
One time a buddy of mine at State Highway yard was told to fuel up one of the crew cabs. He went over to the gas station and pumped gasoline into the diesel tank. They had to drain the tank after that one. ;)
