President Joe Biden may have said on the campaign trail that Puerto Rico should become a state, but that doesn't mean he supports laws that make it a viable, economically competitive state if doing so means angering maritime unions.

In an executive order signed Monday and in subsequent comments, Biden made it abundantly clear that he supports the Jones Act, a 1920 federal law that requires that cargo ships traveling between American ports be made in America and owned and crewed by American citizens:

The executive action I am taking also reiterates my strong support for the Jones Act and American vessels, you know, and our ports, especially those important for America's clean energy future and the development of offshore renewable energy.

Ever notice that laws are passed 100 years ago are always pushed to the side where a lot of money can be made.

When we drove trucks for Vestal out of Niangua we had to go to the underground cold storage near Carthage and pick up load of zero degree frozen chickens.

We had to have the reefer running and cooled down or they would not load us. We blew a tire when down there so we had to call for a service truck before we left out.

We took that load to the docks in Miami and they put it on a boat and sent it to Puerto Rico.

You know that reefer had been working since when we opened the doors the fog came rolling out. ;)

I wonder if there's any chance this will disincline PR from wanting to become a state. More likely the opposite -- "hey, you ruined our shipping, you have to make us a state!" Tho' why any country would want to unite with the JewSA at this point is a puzzlement.
