Whoa. That's too cold for me. My wood stove is out of service for the first time in 35 years here -- need to install a chimney liner to avoid a chimney fire. Tons of seasoned firewood, but don't want to risk it. So my heat pumps are icing up here in the cold cold rain.

Stay warm.

We dragged like 50 plants in from the garden, and they are crowding the LR and kitchen.

The banana plants around here are already long gone, and at 9° Fahrenheit Monday night, there's gonna be lots of palm trees in the neighborhood fit for the firewood pile.

Nobody's seen Houston weather like this in living memory.

Can you grow real edible bananas around Houston? Or are the plants just decorative?

Must be algore's global warming going on.

That's it. Anyway, welcome to Ft. Wayne fellas.

My house learned a neat, new trick. When I was out shoveling snow the other day, I noticed water (ice) coming out of the soffit vent on the SW corner of my house (not good).

Checking the north central IA temps reveals our tenant farmers enjoying a brisk -15 as I peck away. At least their homes are built for this sort of weather, unlike ours down here.

Can you grow real edible bananas around Houston?

You can do it with some varieties here. It works better closer to the coast like in Galveston or in deep south Texas.

Lots of care, attention, water, and fertilizer is required, so most of the plants around here are ornamental.

Anywho, the winters in Houston kill them off most of the time around.

I expect to see them all gone this year, dude.

-2 degrees here, no power loss yet ! Power losses are dangerous especially if you have electric heat.

I remember living in Indy and having oil heat back in the day. It smelled terrible. My dad was a fireman and drove a fuel oil truck on his days off (from the fire dept) ... he never had days off ! What a guy !!!

They's a banana plant within sight of the house here and it is quite daid. Shriveled beyond resurrection, flopped down over a century plant (agave) that seems to be doing OK.

It has cracked freezing north of Houston minutes ago, and the power has just come back on after 36 frozen hours. We been sleeping in front of the fireplace, cooking on the BBQ, and making coffee on gas logs.

My better half says, "It's like camping in the living room!"

Have had a standby generator for 40 years. Recently installed whole house full time generator for $6000. Runs on NG or LP gas in case Biden closes down all pipelines.

Sounds like fun. Glad you were able to make out so well.

When the power goes out here -- a couple of times a year normally, sometimes for several hours or even 2-3 days (only rarely that long, though) -- my wife is after me to fire up the generator within minutes. We have well water here -- no power, no water.
