Cristian Pavon, 11, died Tuesday after his home in Conroe lost power at the weekend and temperatures plunged to single digits.

His devastated mother Maria Elisa Pineda told the Washington Post she went to check on him as he was huddled under a pile of blankets in bed and found him unresponsive.

Here in Indiana, we rely on natural gas, there is a huge reserve up by Muncie. I don't recall any of it solidifying.

I'm guessing condensation in the lines eventually plugged the pipes. A similar situation here plugged my neighbor's underground lines. NIPSCO had to dig down and run a temporary feed from my service.

That's why most residential gas lines have what they call drip legs in the line. It works kind of like a reverse plumbing trap.

Gas pipes are usually underground and the gas is pressurized, it doesn't require mechanical pumps to get into the home.

The oil from those Texas wells still needs to go to a refinery to be processed before it can be used to heat homes.

I used to live in a house heated by oil, we had to have it delivered to our home by oil truck.

So the oil rigs freezing up should have no short term effect on heating oil.

It'd be more of a problem with dangerous road conditions preventing delivery I would think if there were any kind of shortage

The problem isn't with oil or lack of it though.

The problem is that oil and gas furnaces require electricity to function.

No electricity, no heat.

I re-read your question, thought you were talking about oil wells, my mistake.

I think gas wells still need to have some form of pump to pressurize the gas and mechanical valves to control the flow that gets routed to pipes.

Electricity goes out

We had 70 mph straight line winds here about 3 months ago. It snapped off 4 power poles a couple blocks away. Power was out 36 hours. Only ones I saw with a generator was a house across the street and one guy with a generator on back of his truck. He parked on side road and ran a line into his apartment to run his fridge. I did not lose any food since I kept freezer door shut. Small refrigerator defrosted though which was good deal. It was not hard getting by without the AC, but I sure rather have it than not. After all I worked concerts back in 80s and 90s and sweat my balls off plenty of times. :)

Good question and, sorry, been too tied up to reply.

There was tons of natural gas flowing during the outage periods this week previous. We just let the fireplace rip for a couple of days to warm the house up. That was not the bottleneck.

It seems that the gas supply to power generation plants was not winterized as was supply to petroleum powered plants as well as wind and solar. That was the problem.

We were pretty well backed up with three extra generators, propane, natural gas and water supply put in for the disaster. We've learned a lot from hurricanes.

We're back to normal around here. The biggest difficulty was all the potted plant life we had to haul in from the garden. They all got rescued, but it left us with a big mess to clean up!
