Nitrites in cured meats do cause cancer. Also increases COPD, emphysema, asthma and other lung diseases. Eating fruits and vegetables and supplementing with antioxidants seems to improve lung function.

Beware of uncured meats that advertise no nitrites added. Small print says they add natural ingredients high in nitrates along with cultures that convert the nitrates into nitrites so you too can get asthma and COPD.
