When we drove big truck we would sometimes get ham steak and eggs for breakfast. Either that or beef steak and eggs.

One time I brought load of Colorado potatoes across Wolf Creek Pass. It was snowing coming across the pass. When I got to Flying J Fuel Stop in La Junta it changed to freezing rain and was like that all the way to truck stop in Dodge City.

When I got in there the truck had an inch of ice on leading edges of truck. I parked and went to get a meal. But restaurant was closed. So I went back to truck and went to bed. ;)

how long were you a driver?

I worked for Illinois State Highways starting in 1980. After leaving there I start to drive trucks OTR and did that even after moving to Missouri. At one point I was driving cross country both team and solo.

When they would send me NW for Washington state produce, I would have three or four pick ups and the whole trip would take three days. I brought along electric cooler with food to save on truck stop meals.

One time I picked up a load of Mexican produce in Yuma, AZ. I was heading for Indian casino in NM to take my break. I was on 2 lane road in NM. It was just about dusk. I come around a curve and the headlights fell on a brown object. It was an ELK. I hit brakes and moved as far right as possible without dropping steer tire off pavement. I just missed hitting it.

So I put out a broadcast on CB that there were Elk out here. Some driver comes back and says, "Elk! I haven't seen Elk in a long time."

I told him, "You don't want to see these Elk. They are too close to the road. I almost hit one." LOL
