I learned how to purify water in Science class, how to grow food in Horticulture class, how to cook in Home Economics class, and how to build in Construction Shop class. All in Middle School, aka Junior High.

That list is platitudinous: learning to read is paramount, and was stupidly omitted. Math is pretty important, too -- especially dimensional analysis and THE POWER OF 1, which I (finally!) learned in High School Chemistry, and it changed my life forever.

They still teach reading and math in some private schools. But a lot of schools apparently don't teach math correctly, because most graduates can't divide 3 basketballs by 2 basketballs and find the correct quotient.

Reading with comprehension is really key to it all.

Thanks for bringing that to the fore.

I also went to a good school but I graduated before LBJ became President through assassination. Modern school's do not even teach handwriting. If you leave a note for a modern child, it has to be printed or they cannot read it.
