I think he pulled a Masada. Would rather die than spend the rest of his life in US custody. Certainly that line of reasoning is in sync with his personality, and is the ultimate act of defiance.

I've stated this a couple times but I'm favoring the eternal snub to the DOJ theory. Without argument, McAfee, viewed the Fed gov not as an authority but as an adversary. For him, authoritarianism in the Fed ranks was a personal beef, not business, and the thought of being in Federal custody would have been angering. It was hours after he lost his extradition appeals in Spain, so that timing supports suicide.

I have a really hard time believing McAfee had 31 terabytes of dirt on the Deep Swamp, not counting things like Alex Jones videos and other public domain info. Reasons: 1) 31 terabytes is HUGE. 2) McAfee was never a Fed insider like Snowden and numerous others were so his access to such info, at least in first hand style, is doubtful. 3) If McAfee had such info, he simply wouldn't sit on it and keep it a secret as that contradicts his very personality. He would have been pumping it out no more than 24 hours after it crossed his desk.

As for "no indication of suicide" from his lawyer, it seems that's based on phone communication which McAfee would have been fully expectant of being bugged, and he certainly knew that if he gave any indication of suicide in any way whatsoever, that the jail warden would have thrown him naked into a padded room and done complete cavity searches every 3 hours and spoiled any such suicide plans. Secrecy was paramount.

The statement he made about if he was found Epsteined it would not be his "fault" is a bit short of a claim that he wouldn't take his own life. Any statement he made about not killing himself before he was arrested in Spain I'd take as inapplicable as in that context he had every reason to live and not die. Upon hearing the extreme likelihood that he would spend the rest of his life in a US prison, the sentiment and motives change dramatically.

Secret encrypted phones & phone services are already here, So McAfee isn't needed for that tech. But if one has no faith in contemporary encryption, then I suppose that argument doesn't hold much water. Then again, if you don't trust encryption, then how would one expect McAfee to create a secret phone?

McAfee was by all accounts a very intelligent guy who made his own rules all through his life. So I don't see him deciding to kill himself as an act of ultimate defiance to be any deviation from that lifelong practice. Much to the contrary, to me it's a case of him dying the way he lived. On his own terms.

I think you make a good case. I tend to agree with you. Long term max security, likely with thugs paid to harass him, would be worse than death. He had is assets confiscated (presumably his crypto too), and he had made some bad enemies.
