Feinstein was a mayor before she was a Senator. She was not wealthy as a city councilwoman. She screwed up the hillside strangler case by leaking evidence to the press prematurely. She made her million the old-fashioned way through bribery. She gave lands with gold deposits worth more than $100 billion dollars to Southern Pacific Railroad real estate in exchange for some worthless desert floor property.

She also won the mayoralty election by campaigning the night before in all the gay sadomasochistic bars. Both candidates had campaigned for the gay vote.
