For the first 2 years the North had to learn how to lead and fight a modern war. The Prussians under Helmuth von Moltke sent observers to the US during the Civil War. General Grant was their exemplar of modern warfare.

I saw in an old magazine that when that happened "all Israel mourned". Made me catch my breath. The South (Southern Christians) at that time must have considered themselves the House of Israel.
