going back to Mexico to avoid being deported back to their home countries

I doubt the Haitians would want to go back to Haiti. That country was deforested long ago to use the wood to build cook fires. :-/

Most of them didn't arrive from Haiti but from Chile, Brazil and Panama where they were not doing as well as they would have liked and hoping to do better in the U.S. The few hundred sentto Haiti were horrified.

I had heard the Haitians cut their trees for cooking fires.

Nevertheless, you cannot deforest and expect the soil to remain stable.

All the trees around Lake Tahoe were cut to build shoring in the Comstock Lode. They never reforested. Now the hillsides are sliding into the lake. :-/
