Amen. I don't even know what "gain of function" is supposed to mean. Whenever I see that term I think "monolithic bipolar junction transistor closed-loop voltage-feedback inverting operational amplifier". (Because the late, great analog designer Jim Williams said "Always invert, unless you can't.")
