When we worked for Illinois State Highways, the State would donate to the United Way and then go to the employees to get the money back.

Three of us refused to allow deductions from our paychecks. We were assigned to litter pick and were dropped off about a mile apart. I can recall the ambulance and squad car making a U-turn at the end of the G-wall to go and pick up the black guy that took a tumble down the embankment.

After that the orders were that we were not allowed to work without immediate supervision. ;)
