The South seceded over State's Rights. Slavery was not an issue until 1863 when Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation. And this only freed slaves in the rebellious states.

BTW, the Turkey Buzzards came to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863 and never left. ;)
