Some two decades after first drawing widespread attention, a small (but detectable by satellite) uplift near the South Sister volcano is making news once again, with a quicker rate of rising ground than seen for years, accompanied by some small but noticeable, shallow earthquakes. But an eruption, geologists assure, is not in the cards any time soon.

Here's the U.S. Geological Survey's news release, issued Monday, of the latest activity:

Using satellite imagery and sophisticated GPS instruments, Cascades Volcano Observatory geophysicists have detected a subtle increase in the rate of uplift of the ground surface about 3 miles (5 km) west of South Sister volcano, Oregon. Episodes of increased uplift have been observed in this area before, and the volcano’s alert level and color code remain at NORMAL / GREEN.

I expect a major catastrophe - earthquakes and/or volcanoes - either along the West Coast or the New Madrid fault from Memphis to St Louis by November of 2024.

Will you buy us all a banana split if you're wrong?

It has been over 210 years since the last series of 4 quakes on the New Madrid. We have lots of potential quakes and volcanoes on the West Coast. We have more cosmic rays (nuclear particles from distant stars) bombarding the earth. In November of 2024 we will have a planetary alignment in November of 2024 that has not been seen since 79 AD when Vesuvius blew up Pompeii.

That sounds like a no ;)

We're living thru a time when none of the usual rules seem to apply -- economic, moral, geological, what have you.
