You don't need fertilizer but it takes 2 to 3 years to get away from it. Sri Lanka tries to go cold turkey off fertilizer but had to relent. They quit because they could not afford to import it.

Do farmers give acres a year off anymore? Knowing this mad world they probably squeeze each for as many growth cycles as conditions allow.

I used to be a subscriber to Rodale's Organic Gardening magazine. It had the best tips on how to maintain a healthful soil structure with large amounts of organic matter which helped in the health of plants.

Brix is the measure of the amount of sugar in a plant. Plants with Brix 12 and above are immune to plants diseases and to pests. Locusts in Africa flew right by Brix 12 plants.
