For the first time in decades, it's hard to ignore the threat of nuclear war. But as long as you're far from the blast, you're safe, right? Wrong. In this sobering talk, atmospheric scientist Brian Toon explains how even a small nuclear war could destroy all life on earth -- and what we can do to prevent it. A professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Brian Toon investigates the causes of the ozone hole, how volcanic eruptions alter the climate, how ancient Mars had flowing rivers, and the environmental impacts of nuclear war. He contributed to the U.N.’s Nobel Peace Prize for climate change and holds numerous scientific awards, including two NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement. He is an avid woodworker. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

If anything like this happens, it sure will not be like Red Dawn.

General William Devereaux: The CIA didn't know the Berlin Wall was coming down until bricks started hitting them in the head.

And it wasn't until the USSR ceased to exist that they learned how close we were to a nuclear war because of the Able-Archer 83 exercises in Europe. They had several launch orders, but a cool headed Soviet Colonel refused to do it.

When I was in high school, I told my classmates:

1) There will never be a nuclear war because nuclear weapons kill rich people.

2) How real can the Cold War be? Both sides have the same bankers, the Rothschilds and the Rockefellers.

When I was in high school...

When I was in grade school one of the first books I was given was called "How to survive an atomic bomb" or some such nonsense. Studied it for 35 years? LOL. I lived it.

Nuclear winter steming from a "small" nuclear war between India and Pakistan seems questionable. Butween the US, Russia and China, a couple thousand nuclear weapon tests were conducted between WW2 and the 1960, or so. But there doesn't seem to be any record of weather being impacted. Granted it was spread out over time but still...

You can speed it up to 1.5x or 2x, but if this guy is correct, it seems we should already be dead.

I guess that's not a fair illustration/challenge as the test ban treaty was in 1963 which prohibited nuke testing in the air, water or space, but not underground, so presumably the vast majority of these were underground.

Has there been a nuclear war? Threats since the 1950s. But no war. We do have covid, covid vaxxes, bird flu (mixed with Spanish flu), African Swine flu which killed 40% of the hogs in China and food shortages.

I can remember the "duck and cover" drills we did in grade school in Chicago back in the 60s. ;)

How real can the Cold War be? Both sides have the same bankers, the Rothschilds and the Rockefellers.

Abe Lincoln spurned the usury of the European bankers and printed Greenbacks to finance the Civil War.

But back then if you were wealthy, you could sell your service in the Army to some poor slob, and he would do the dying in the war. ;)

OMG! The Sex Pistols! We worked them in Chicago. I think it was at Medusa's about a mile south of Wrigley Field. They were a British band. And Medusa's had a small mosh pit. ;)

Able-Archer 83

JFK settled the Cuban Missile crisis by withdrawing the Pershing missiles from Turkey.

They talk about Hitler launching Operation Barbarossa and how it impacted Ukrainian and Russian citizens. But what they do not mention is the Blitzkrieg was able to overrun Soviet forces that were massing for an attack to the west. ;)

The final scene of the video was of Reagan and Gorbachev.

After they had their meeting in Iceland, Reagan said, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." And then the Berlin Wall came down, and with it the Iron Curtain. ;)
