Lots of companies are firing their janitors and using "temps" -- laborers from a temporary employment agency.

My mother-in-law was a janitor at a big automotive company. When she retired in 1990, she was making $37,000 a year (over $85,000 in today's Bidenbucks!) not including overtime. Five weeks of vacation, and the best benefit package (medical insurance, pension, etc.) imaginable.

Today her job is typically done by a temp from El Salvador who doesn't speak English, makes minimum wage (not including welfare), and gets no other benefits.
