Could get a lot worse for the EU as the Russian Duma is waiting for the UN inspectors to report on the Ukrainians shelling that nuclear power plant. If they pass a law saying Ukraine is a terrorist state, then any nation sending aid to the Ukraine gets zero natural gas.

That qualifies as escalation. We would assume Europe would then come to the negotiating table to defuse things, but that is an assumption.

It was the Ukraine that escalated by shelling a nuclear power plant and by kidnapping 60,000 children. Europeans remember Chernobyl very well as they were much closer to it.
