Smart parents at the time would have preferred a girl in such an environment. She'd get her choice of a guy, and would choose one that makes good money.

Women choose men who are bigger and wealthier. In rural areas the death rate for female babies was near 80 to 90%.

That statement is not even close to being true. However, the one child police did result in as excess of 30 million additional males. China’s sex ratio at birth went from 108.5 males to 100 females in 1982 to a peak of 121.1 males to 100 females in 2004, according to official data.
