I don't recite socialist Bellamy's anti-Southern "pledge", and I don't sing ugly feminist Julia Ward Howe's battle "hymn".

Years ago my oldest daughter, then a church pianist, unfortunately had to live in Michigan for a year or so. When she refused to play their Battle "Hymn" during a "patriotic service" the damnyankee Baptists about ruptured their spleens. They were glad to see her go, and we were glad to see her come back to the South.
