My father was one of the Marines there. He still remembered it with horror all the way to the end.

To get a much better feel for what it was like, see Tom Hanks "The Pacific" miniseries which covers a number of island invasions by marines of WW2. It may include this island. Hanks' politics aside, it seems a very good production.

My father was one of the Marines there.

My Mom was in love with a SeaBee, but he got killed in the south Pacific.

Then she met my Dad at a dance hall. She always told my two sisters, "Never marry someone you meet at a dance hall." :-/
