Normally the Mossad would have obtained advance notice of something this big but it appears they either didn't get wind of it or they did and just let it happen so that Israel could basically invade and annex the Gaza strip or something.

Maybe Hamas will put those Israeli prisoners on rooftops.

I expect the prisoners / hostages (in the case of civilians) to be used as human shields to complicate, or try to complicate, the Israeli response. Alternatively, they could be used for prisoner transfers of those held in Israeli jails. Those are the best uses Hamas could make of them, practically speaking.
