When it comes to the world of geopolitics, there is always far more going on than meets the eye. The long-range missiles that Ukraine is now firing deep into Russian territory are not going to change the course of the war. But the Russian response to those long-range missiles might. Hopefully the Russians will show restraint, because they may not even realize that they are being led into a trap.

Putin most certainly knows the US policy change is the Deep Swamp reacting to the election loss to Trump. I'm confident his revision of Russia's nuclear policy is indeed a reaction to the US policy change, but that it's designed to be something that Trump can negotiate away granting Trump a paper form of diplomatic victory he can wave in front of the US media machine as part of a negotiated termination of hostilities, and something Putin wouldn't mind at all retracting as it would not carry any domestic political cost to do so.

But that doesn't mean Russia won't respond in brutal fashion against Ukraine. There are 2 long months before Trump takes office. And of course Trump has to live that long.
