Niger has taken a decisive step by suspending BBC radio broadcasts for three months following a report that claimed jihadists had killed 90 Nigerien soldiers. Authorities labeled the claim as “baseless assertions” and an “intoxication campaign” aimed at destabilizing the country. This suspension impacts BBC programs in Hausa and French, broadcast through local radio partners.
This action is part of a broader trend in the Sahel region, where military juntas have increasingly cracked down on foreign media. Since the military coup in July 2023, Niger has also banned French broadcasters France 24 and Radio France Internationale (RFI), accusing them of spreading false information.
