Elon Musk's xAI has unveiled Colossus 2, the world's first gigawatt-scale AI supercomputer, designed to train advanced AI models like Grok. Announced in August 2025 and recently highlighted with a photo shared by Musk on X in September 2025, the system is being built in Memphis, Tennessee, repurposing an abandoned Electrolux factory. Colossus 2 is planned to incorporate 550,000 Nvidia GPUs, including the latest GB200 and GB300 models, significantly expanding from the 200,000 GPUs that powered the initial Colossus system by early 2025.

The project is a strategic component of Musk’s broader technological ecosystem, supporting not only xAI but also Tesla, SpaceX, and the X platform. The supercomputer's immense power demands—potentially reaching one gigawatt, with phase two alone expected to consume up to 300 megawatts—are being addressed through a combination of grid power from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Tesla Megapack batteries, and temporary natural gas turbines. To meet future energy needs, Musk has confirmed plans to import an entire overseas power plant, potentially drawing up to two gigawatts.

xAI's rapid deployment is supported by key partnerships, notably with Dell Technologies, which is involved in assembling AI-optimized server racks, including the PowerEdge XE9680 model. Analysts project xAI's goal of scaling to one million GPUs overall, backed by $6 billion in funding and ongoing collaborations with Supermicro and Nvidia. This expansion underscores the intensifying global race for AI dominance, where energy infrastructure has become as critical as computational innovation.
