It would be quite a comeback for Mac to unseat Windows.  Back in the early 80's there was huge competition for OS systems.  Microsoft and Apple came up on top.  All others died out with Unix as the exception.  Apple survived as an alternative by giving computers to schools, ensuring market brand loyalty would be preserved as the students graduated.  Linus Torvald, I think his name is, began making an open source clone of Unix which grew in popularity and was eventually named Linux.

There is a server market that doesn't include Macintosh.  That's purely Windows or Linux, with Linux having a strong hold on that share.  Of course Android for mobile items is based on Linux.  I see Linux as completely fine for Desktop usage also and the fact that it's fine for older systems is a big plus.  I've been using Linux for about the last 27 years, back when installing it mean answering every question during the setup correctly was needed or the install would lock up.  It's come a long way.
