A Megaquake (9.0 or greater) only happens when one of 9 tectonic plates upon which all masses sit
thrusts up under another plate.
The video below is of a less powerful quake which are called slip faults. In the video you can see ground
moving in one direction while the side of the fault line does not move.
The New Madrid fault is a Rift fault where a rift is growing over a long geological time. Eventually,
the Mississippi river might become 25 miles wide with little water in it year round.
