The United States has deployed a significant number of military aircraft to the Middle East amid heightened tensions with Iran, though these forces are officially intended to enhance defensive posture and protect U.S. personnel rather than launch offensive operations. As of early January 2026, open-source intelligence and flight tracking data indicate the movement of more than 30 U.S. C-17A Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft toward the region, along with specialized assets including AC-130J Ghostrider gunships, P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, KC-135R aerial refuelers, CV-22B Ospreys, and MH-60S helicopters.

Two U.S. Navy aircraft carriers—the USS Carl Vinson and the USS Nimitz—are also operating in the region, each carrying around 90 aircraft including F-35C stealth fighters and F/A-18 Super Hornets. The Nimitz, redeployed from the South China Sea, is part of a broader buildup that includes destroyers equipped with Aegis ballistic missile defense systems.

While the Pentagon has not confirmed specific offensive plans, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the deployments aim to “enhance our defensive posture in the region” and ensure the protection of American forces. President Donald Trump has issued conflicting statements, urging Iran to sign a nuclear deal while also calling for evacuations of Tehran and expressing support for Israeli military actions. Iran, facing internal unrest and external pressure, has accused the U.S. of complicity in Israeli strikes on its nuclear facilities and military leadership.

Although no B-2 stealth bombers—often indicative of deep-strike intent—have been confirmed in the deployment, the scale of the air buildup represents one of the largest U.S. military mobilizations in the region in recent years, fueling concerns about potential escalation.
