My understand is that yes, Iran was fighting against ISIS in Syria.  I've never heard them described as "mortal enemies" though so that may be a bit strong a characterization.  Certainly Russia and Iran are allies and Russia was bombing ISIS and saved, if only temporarily, the Assad regime.
