in Cedar Rapids electronic surplus was easy to come by, Collins Radio had their own room of stuff, soldering irons were ten for a dollar in '85. there was another guy just down from Cedar Rapids Tent and Awning I'd get 60/40 rosin core around three dollars a pound roll. they had alphanumeric displays with filament segment that used vacuum tube drivers, I think they were ten-character units with all the stuff to build the drivers. the cable companies tried to avoid setting up shop there saying with the technology at hand they couldn't keep people from getting the service for the price of the components. the videocypher II chip made "stealing" cable next to impossible as it was what the US used for secure satellite comms. they were hacked but it cost a lot just getting the IC they were a few thousand dollars each with lengthy prison terms to be in possession of an unmounted unit, they had to drill into the case to map the chip.

We had a surplus place like that downtown, Pembleton Electronics. After they moved to Industrial Park in the 80s, they were never the same.
I wouldn't know where to get electronic components now to save my ass. Amazon?

Honda forecasts its first annual loss in almost 70 years, citing a $15.7 billion write down from its EV business.

Government ‘Kill Switch’ in Your Next Car — And Congress Made It Happen [Jan 25, 2026]

Trump's New EPA Rules Could Mean a HUGE Price Drop on New Cars [Jan 2, 2026]

While Trump's rollback of Prez Pedo's BS [impossible] EPA mileage standards and EV mandates makes things better for cars, I think the 'kill switch' mandates are still in effect for the 2027 model year unless he decides to scrap that also, if he even knows about them.

[Side story] My sister's relatively new, but out of warranty Subaru Outback has/had a radio problem. It's affecting several systems not handled by the engine control electronics, radio, phone, navigation, lane departure, etc. when she hits a bump.

The dealer quoted her several thousand dollars for a new radio or wiring harness, etc. They think they found a problem with a wiring harness 'clip' [they might've meant connector or something], I don't know. I haven't talked to her since last week, so if it's fixed or not and how much it cost is anybody's guess.

They've done a good job of making cars unaffordable and sucking any fun out of owning them.  The same thing with the censorship going on with the news and social media with their ban of the truth. You can't figure out what to believe anymore. It's all bullshit.

Imagine the joys and problems of 'kill switches' in the future. Your new, 4-door, self-driving Tesla will drive you to jail if you have a beer, but not to the hospital if you have a heart attack. My buddy, Leo actually drove himself to the hospital when his aorta ruptured a long time ago, they managed to save him. He committed suicide several years later. Probably over the hospital bill, I doubt he had insurance.

This is not in Iran, it's in China, on the highway in Hebei (大广高速河北肃宁段). It happened today. A truck is fully loaded with new EVs. There has been no missile, drone or bomb attack, the EVs started fire by themselves. [Video]

https://x.com/bxieus/status/2033600716443468153

It was a super-sized truck, even Chinese official news confirmed that it happened on highway, not railway. The video is a lot worse.

I am intimidated by the number of languages that appear in your posts. I do good with English and do even better to hold back from telling off the HelpDeskHindooWoman. I kept begging her to speak more slowly, when I was able to get a word in without feeling like I was interrupting her.

there was a game on the computer I did ammunition transaction reports on that was called TIM the incredible machine one had to select from a fixed list of parts to build a machine to perform a specific task, the parts list could include magnifying lenses, candles, rope even cannons. that was back in '97 so I'm sure AI has fugged it all up by now.

It's snowing heavy here in Kokomo, off and on between little eyes of these furious onslaughts of heavy snow. Sun popped out bright from the west a couple times earlier today, holes in the storm I think,  while it was still snowing hard.

I've seen rainbows when it was snowing, but kept it to myself because I don't want to get into a public argument about if a rainbow during a snowstorm should be called a snowbow, or if the public is satisfied with just rainbow

BREAKING: FEDERAL JUDGE SHUTS DOWN CHILDHOOD VACCINE REFORM

 1. BLOCKS the vaccine schedule overhaul from 17 to 11 vaccines

 2. BLOCKS ending universal newborn Hepatitis B shots

3. SUSPENDS the new ACIP committee.

4. NULLIFIES all ACIP votes since June

U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy has made a grave mistake.

As a result, the previous CDC childhood hyper-vaccination schedule remains in effect for now.

The ruling is NOT a final decision and is expected to be appealed.

The Bio-Pharmaceutical Complex remains fully operational.

that golden arch supper club meat has large quantities of ahem fillers, instead of making glue from the hides and hoofs they make capsules to hold those pharmaceuticals so the peoples can trade a symptom for a half dozen side effects.

real windy today fire and small craft warnings since 10 last night down to 48 this morning I think we hit 80 this afternoon. had two ospreys eating what turned out to be a dove within 15 feet of the coops my birds just milling around they didn't issue any alarm about them. I've seen these two birds a number of times before there are at least two mating pairs. this is the first year I've seen them past the old pond about an easy eight or so minute walk pond to coops. no hawks this year so far, got a picture of a large healthy coyote on my trail camera at the old pond. there is a twelve point buck in there I've been watching to catch the antler shed maybe find one or both big heavy beams that'd make good knife handles.
