Oregon has extended its policy dropping mandatory reading, writing, and math proficiency requirements for high school graduation.

The state first paused these “Essential Skills” tests back in 2021 during the pandemic, saying they were hitting students of color, English learners, and students with disabilities harder.

 That pause is now extended through the 2027–2028 school year.

 Students still need to finish their regular course credits, but they don’t have to pass standardized tests or submit work samples to get a diploma anymore.
