THE LAST TANKER
On May 3, 2026, a Hong Kong-flagged tanker called the New Corolla docked at the Port of Long Beach, California. It was carrying two million barrels of Iraqi crude oil loaded at the Port of Basra on February 24, four days before the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury against Iran and the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed.
That tanker was the last one. The last oil shipment from the Middle East to reach American shores. It arrived, it unloaded, and now it is gone.
The buffer that kept fuel flowing for two months, tankers that were already at sea when the war started, is exhausted. Bryon Stock, director of the Chevron El Segundo refinery, one of the largest refineries on the West Coast, called it a “significant milestone that I’ve not seen or faced in my 27-year career.” His refinery normally receives 20 percent of its crude from the Arab Gulf. That supply is now zero. California imports roughly 60 percent of its crude. Roughly 20 percent of that came from the Middle East. Gone.

For two months, the world coasted on oil that was already at sea. That floating inventory masked the full scale of what was happening. It kept prices high but stable. It kept fuel flowing. It kept people thinking this was just another spike at the pump.
That illusion ended on May 3 in Long Beach.
We are no longer in a price crisis. We are entering a physical shortage. A point where fuel stops being available at any price because there is none left to sell.
THE NUMBERS THAT PROVE IT
As of the week ending May 1, total U.S. commercial petroleum inventories fell by 5.9 million barrels in a single week. Crude oil stocks dropped 2.3 million barrels. Distillate fuel (diesel and jet fuel) dropped 1.3 million barrels and now sits 11 percent below the five-year average, at the lowest level since 2005. U.S. gasoline stocks fell 2.5 million barrels. This was the eleventh straight weekly decline in gasoline inventories.

Globally, the net market deficit is running at 5.1 million barrels per day according to the EIA’s Q2 2026 estimate. But that is only the gap between production and consumption. When you include the drawdown of strategic reserves, floating storage, and commercial stocks worldwide, the gross depletion rate reaches 10 to 13 million barrels per day. One analysis estimates that over one billion barrels of stored petroleum have been depleted since late February.
To put that in context, the entire U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve held 413 million barrels in December 2025. We have burned through the equivalent of more than two full Strategic Petroleum Reserves in ten weeks.

Palantir to be granted ‘unlimited access’ to NHS patient data
The NHS is granting staff from companies including Palantir ‘unlimited access’ to identifiable patient data while working on its federated data platform (FDP), the Financial Times (FT) reported.
The change, outlined in an internal briefing note seen by the FT, relates to the National Data Integration Tenant (NDIT), described as a “safe haven for data” before it is “pseudonymised” and shared with other systems, the report said.

NHS England will create an “admin” role, granting Palantir staff “unlimited access” to the NDIT and identifiable patient data, the FT added.
As well as Palantir employees, this could include staff from consultancy firms who have been drafted in to work on the FDP. The change marks a clear shift from the current practice, which requires any individual working with the NDIT to apply for clear data access for specific data sets.
An NHS England spokesperson told Digital Health News: “The NHS has strict policies in place for managing access to patient data and carries out regular audits to ensure compliance — including monitoring the work of engineers helping to set up the central data collection platform that will track NHS performance and help improve care for patients.

What could go wrong? Scientists just set off 8,000 EARTHQUAKES deep beneath the Swiss Alps
It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen – but scientists have just set off thousands of earthquakes deep beneath the Swiss Alps.
The controversial experiment was carried out by researchers from ETH Zurich in a bid to 'understand what happens at depth when Earth moves.'
To trigger the earthquakes, the researchers injected 750,000 litres of water into the ground via two boreholes over 50 hours.
Despite an unexpected power outage, the experiment proved a success, with a total of 8,000 tiny quakes triggered.
'While some seismic events occurred on the target fault zone, a large number of events took place on neighbouring geological structures activated by the fluid injection,' the researchers explained.
Thankfully, the earthquakes were too small to be felt or to cause damage at the surface.
The researchers hope the findings will help to understand the natural triggers for earthquakes – and how to stop them.
Professor Domenico Giardini, one of the lead researchers on the project, said: 'If we master how to produce quakes of a certain size, then we know how not to produce them.'
The Fault Activation and Earthquake Rupture (FEAR–2) experiment was carried out by the BedrettoLab at the end of last month.
'Earthquakes are among the most destructive natural hazards that humanity is confronted with,' the research website explains.
'Although scientists have been trying to predict earthquakes for decades, no existing method can predict with certainty and precision where and when a major quake will happen.
'Lack of understanding of the earthquake–generation process is a major obstacle for large–scale use of deep geothermal energy in hot but low permeable reservoirs – an almost inexhaustible energy source that could potentially be harvested with a very small ecological footprint.'
To reach the fault, the researchers first had to build a 120 metre–long tunnel, starting 2.2km from the entrance of the main Bedretto tunnel.
Next, they placed a dense monitoring network of sensors on and around the fault, to monitor everything from temperature to seismic activity.
From 22 April, the team started injecting water into the ground to try to induce seismic events.
In total, 750,000 litres were injected over approximately 50 hours of operation
'The decision to stop the experiment was taken when an increasing number of seismic events occurred outside of the core measurement network, limiting their scientific analysis,' the team explained.
Thankfully, the seismicity was well below the expected range.
'The ground shaking produced outside the tunnel was 5'000 to 6'000 times below the design ground acceleration value from the Swiss Norms, with peak ground acceleration values of 0.000014g at the tunnel entrance, 0.0000167g at the top of the mountain, and 0.0000172g at the Furka Base Tunnel entrance,' the researchers said.
'These values are approximately 700 times below the level associated with perceptible and approximately 7'000 times below levels associated with damaging earthquakes.'
Unsurprisingly, the researchers had to pass a rigorous safety and risk assessment before the experiment could begin – with 'several layers of safety measures in place'.
'All high–pressure injection activities are controlled remotely from Zurich, which means that no personnel are present in the tunnel during the stimulations,' they reassured.
Overall, the study shows that controlled earthquakes can be carried out safely, according to the researchers.
Speaking to AFP, Professor Giardini said: 'It is perfect, because we have a kilometer and a half of mountain on top of us... and we can look very close at the faults, how they move, when they move, and we can make them move ourselves.'
Earthquakes typically occur at the boundaries of tectonic plates, where one plate dips below another, thrusts another upward, or where plate edges scrape alongside each other.
Earthquakes rarely occur in the middle of plates, but they can happen when ancient faults or rifts far below the surface reactivate.
These areas are relatively weak compared to the surrounding plate, and can easily slip and cause an earthquake
