'Serious incident' at Europe's largest nuclear plant – work to stop 'accident' ongoing

An incident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine has left some Russian military personnel injured as efforts to prevent a 'nuclear accident' continue

 Russian military personnel have been injured following a "serious incident" at Europe's largest nuclear power plant.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today said it had been informed of an incident which occurred during de-mining efforts following a localised ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

The ceasefire is in place so that power line repairs can be carried out, repairs the IAEA says are crucial for preventing a "nuclear accident" at the site. The power plant has lost power on several occasions due to fighting in the region.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant - the largest in Europe and one of the world’s 10 biggest - has been under Russian control since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

  "The ZNPP once again had to rely on emergency diesel generators after its sole remaining power line - the 330 kV Ferosplavna - was disconnected due to reported attacks on two electrical substations located on the other side of the Dnipro River.

"With the 750 kV line disconnected for more than two months, the ZNPP has been relying on the 330 kV line, making it extremely vulnerable to conflict-related grid disruptions. The 330 kV line has been disconnected repeatedly in recent weeks, including today."

Mr Grossi said added that restoration of the 750 kV Dniprovska line "would be an important positive step for nuclear safety".

The power plant has been a focus of concern for the IAEA throughout the war due to fears of a potential nuclear catastrophe, as it lies close to the front line in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region.

While these polls cannot predict the election, they underline data showing that Bardella or Le Pen are well positioned to win the presidency in 2027 elections.

 Other recent polls also show that Bardella would win a runoff against a range of candidates. A poll from a week ago from Odoxa showed Bardella beating former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe 52 to 48 percent. Other potential candidates, such as the far-left Jean-Luc Mélenchon, were also beaten by wide margins, with polling showing Bardella nearly 50 points ahead of him, at 74 percent to 26 percent, illustrating the France’s distate for Mélenchon’s politics.

Brussels’ nightmare scenarioPolitico ran a piece three days ago entitled “Brussels’ nightmare scenario,” which predicted that a Bardella-Mélenchon matchup is a real possibility and would be viewed as catastrophic by the EU elite, as both candidates have a highly skeptical view of the European Union.

House Passes Bill To Give Ukraine Billions in Additional Military Aid as War Escalates

The US House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill to provide Ukraine with billions in additional military aid and increase sanctions on Russia, a move that comes as the more than four-year-old war between Russia and Ukraine is escalating.

The Ukraine Support Act passed in a vote of 226-195, with 18 Republicans joining Democrats in supporting the effort. Just one Democrat, Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN), voted against the bill.

The legislation was introduced last year by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and, according to media reports, would provide Ukraine with over $1 billion in military and reconstruction aid. The legislation states that it will make up to $8 billion in direct loans available for Ukraine and the US’s NATO allies.
