Health officials say they are investigating potential sources of exposure

DEFIANCE COUNTY, Ohio (WPTA) - The Defiance County Health Department says it is investigating a recent increase in cyclosporiasis cases in county residents.

People become infected with the severe stomach illness by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis.

Fresh produce like berries, leafy greens, cilantro, basil, and other herbs have been commonly associated with the infections, but health officials say the source of exposure in Defiance County has yet to be identified.

The department says it is working closely with area health departments and health care systems to pinpoint possible sources of exposure.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis usually begin two to 14 days after exposure and include diarrhea described as “explosive” or watery, stomach cramps or abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, dehydration, and weight loss.

The department asks that anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea or any of the other above symptoms contact their healthcare providers, who may order laboratory testing to determine whether Cyclospora is the cause of illness.

They say early diagnosis and treatment can help shorten the duration of the sickness. Without treatment, symptoms can last several days to weeks and may recur over time.

The department encourages residents to take the following precautions:

When produce is intended to be cooked, cook it thoroughly. Heating foods to 160°F (71°C) is the only known method to reliably inactivate Cyclospora parasites.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.

Wash fresh fruits and vegetables under clean, running water before eating, cutting, or preparing them.

Gently scrub firm produce, such as melons, cucumbers, potatoes, and apples, with clean hands or a clean produce brush.

Clean cutting boards, utensils, countertops, and other food preparation surfaces before and after use.

Keep fresh produce separate from raw meat, poultry, seafood, and their juices to prevent cross-contamination.

Refrigerate perishable foods promptly.

Avoid eating produce that appears spoiled or damaged

Washing produce is one of the most important steps to help reduce the risk of many foodborne illnesses, the department says, although it may not eliminate every possible contaminant.

"Our goal is to identify potential sources of exposure while also reminding residents that simple food safety practices can help reduce the risk of many foodborne illnesses.

As we continue our investigation, we encourage everyone to take precautions when handling fresh produce and to contact their healthcare provider if they experience persistent gastrointestinal illness.”

Health Commissioner for the Defiance County Health Department Jamie Gerken.122 cases of the parasite have been reported in Indiana as of July 10, the epidemiology director of foodborne and enteric diseases with the Indiana State Department of Health told the Chicago Tribune.

According to the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, 907 positive cases have been reported in northwest Ohio. For more information on the illness and food safety, visit their website here.

As of July 9, the CDC reported a total of 843 positive cases across the U.S. They note that states are likely to report higher case counts than CDC data reflects, saying they are working closely with states to update their numbers.

I looked a map of the spread yesterday, basically what amounts to a Biowarfare map. Ground Zero seems to be in NE Ohio or E Michigan's lower peninsula. I smell Bill Gates and his ilk.

I should check to see if they're playing "The Andromeda Strain" or similar movies on EweToob Free Movies. They love telegraphing their plans. Netflix was pumping the movie "Outbreak" and others just before Covid.

Defiance is in NW Ohio, just east of FW.

I guess I'll avoid the produce section when I go to the store this week. Wouldn't want to poison me and Kimmy next weekend.

You need to start reading labels…

He was talking about "fixing" our mailboxes.
I thought he was talking about painting them or something.
I looked out this morning, the 4x4 post was sheared off at the ground.
The boxes were laying in Chris's yard.

Lopez got the mailboxes fixed. He got a new 4x4 treated post and top bracket.
I helped with a new address label.
He had to get a new box for himself, his was pretty bent up.
He got an el cheapo black plastic one, $30+.

I have equipment for extracting those posts, comes in handy for wooden and chain link fence repairs or removal. we replaced two mailboxes last year at the same house. a lot can be done with a high lift jack Harbor Freight is putting them on sale very often. We use it for pulling posts of any material with or without concrete, pulling up shrubs or small trees and if need be, change tires on a farm tractor. for really big stuff I have a 1 ton chain fall hoist along with a collection of come alongs and various block and tackles, I hate having to say "if only I had....." now I just say "I don't have that, but I have these and those to cover for that".

I didn't see how Radar got the old 4x4 post out, he was just finishing up when I saw him.
It wasn't in concrete, I just drilled a hole and backfilled it when I put it in about 40 years ago.
He probably just screwed a lag into it and pulled it out. It's really dry up here.

It's really smoky up here from the Kanuk wildfires this morning. Too bad it's not tobacco fields burning, it might settle folks down.

I suppose I should gear up and get to the store today and get ready for my guest this weekend.
It's gonna be a long trip having to head west to downtown to get over the Maumee River to be able to head back east to Georgetown Square.
I've probably got enough food, but am about out of smokes.
Doc doesn't need or want to deal with a nicotine-free Pac in our brief time together.

we still have the dust from the sahara drifting around lot more sunshine today than the past few days, hotter as well. we didn't get a mosquito bloom after the inch of rain last friday the hill country and the houston area got it yesterday/day before over 20 inches in some spots. we had times in the PI during the monsoons when 4 inches in fifteen minutes was common didn't matter if it was day or night the rain was so heavy all you could see past arm's length was a wall of gray.
