For 60 years the blue tits of Britain broke into the milk on your doorstep, and all they ever took was the cream.

It was first seen in Swaythling, near Southampton, in 1921. A blue tit landed on a bottle, pecked through the cap and drank. By the 1950s every tit in the country seemed to know the trick. Housewives put out saucers, stones and upturned cups. The birds learned to follow the milk float down the street and be waiting at the next step.

You will remember the bottle. Silver foil on top, and beneath it 2 inches of thick yellow cream that had risen overnight, with the white milk underneath. The first one down in the morning got it on the porridge.

That cream was the whole point of the burglary. A bird cannot digest milk. It has no means of handling the sugar in it. Cream is nearly all fat, with very little sugar, so the tits drank down to the line and stopped.

A wild animal weighing 11 grams, with every bird table and berry bush in the street to choose from, worked out how to open a sealed container to get at butterfat.

Then the habit died, in about 10 years. Nobody trapped them or changed the caps. The milk changed. It was homogenised so the cream no longer rose, then skimmed so it was hardly there, then moved to a plastic jug in a supermarket.

The blue tits inspected the red top, found nothing in it worth stealing, and went back to the hedge.

They were the last creatures in Britain to judge a pint of milk on what was actually in it.

Red dye diesel [heating oil] is hitting more pumps right now.

With the temporary government allowance letting off-road (red dye) diesel be used in highway trucks through the end of the year, a lot of guys are going to see a cheaper option and fill up.

Chemically it’s still diesel. The problem is how a lot of it has been stored.

Off-road fuel is often kept in above-ground tanks, lower-volume sites, and setups with weaker filtration. Those tanks swing more with the weather, so condensation and water are common. Water doesn’t lubricate a high-pressure pump. On a CP4 [I don't know what that is], that shows up as scoring, metal, and a fuel system that needs more than a filter.

We’ve seen more fuel-system failures on construction and farm equipment that lives on dyed fuel than on trucks that stay on high-turnover road diesel. With more of this fuel going into pickups over the next month or two, expect that gap to close in the wrong direction.

If you’re going to run it:

• Buy where volume is high

• Prefer underground tanks and stations that actually filter the fuel

• Don’t trust a slow farm tank or a pump that sits for weeks

• Keep a spare fuel filter on the truck and watch for power loss, hard starts, or a rattling pump

Cheap fuel isn’t cheap if it takes out the CP4, rails, and injectors.

were Reed and Prince screwdrivers replaced by JIS screwdrivers? I need to open the battery case on my ebike to replace (hope) the 10 amp fuse on the charge in side of the battery right now I have to remove the battery to expose the contacts on the charge out side of the battery to connect the charger to recharge the battery. what looks to be a number one Phillips is not. the screws are not out and hence my plight lefty loosie righty tight.
