Actually I think it's more accurate to say the West wanted to hurt Russia by getting Ukraine to impale itself on it.

On that point, I'd say Z is right.  As far as domestic fuel prices go, that's Trump's doing, not Z's.  Trump has had sanctions on Russia for a long time now, afterall and as recently as 3-4 weeks ago, was imposing tariffs on countries buying Russian oil.  Trump blaming Z is just making him a scapegoat for Trump's war on Iran.  A convenient scapegoat for American that just don't know any better, but a scapegoat none the less.

Putin may well have agreed to this deal fully knowing the fallout that's coming down.

If oil was the problem, crude would be $300, not $95.

Yanukovych won the election, but after Crimea was annexed by Russia, Crimea no longer voted in Ukraine elections, shifting the political advantage rather permanently to western Ukraine against the remaining pro-Russian states.  The Donbass states of Lugansk and Donetsk begged Putin to annex their states as well but Putin declined.  I guess he considered that pushing his luck at the time as far as western tolerance goes, but I think now he wishes he had done it.  

The extreme eastern edge states - the Donbass region - are very pro-Russian.
