We the undersigned request and urge that the Anderson County Council decline to move, remove or otherwise alter the Confederate monument in the center of town. The same goes for any other token of Southern/Confederate history and culture. This history is noble, honorable and major – it is not negotiable or a political bargaining chip. Anarchy is in the air today as fanatics demand the extirpation of everything not deemed politically correct. They must be stopped, not heeded. They are clearly driven by hatred of America, her people and traditions – not fairness or equality as is stridently claimed. Concession has never worked with such extremists. Cancel culture is a plague, not a cause. We trust you not to get involved in it. A fence was put up around the monument for protection a few years ago. Is it meaningless now? This is supposed to be a settled matter. The state legislature passed the Heritage Act to obviate all such conflict, but the Act is now as embattled as the monuments et al. The entire issue should be moot in the first place because there were never any actual grounds for removing the Confederate flags from places of honor at and in the State House. It only resulted from a hate campaign by the newsmedia and fringe organizations and betrayals by politicians of both parties: they simply shut the general public out of the discussion. It is only in dictatorships that statues are pulled down because they don’t match a new political vogue. Anderson is not the USSR where Joseph Stalin demolished the huge Cathedral of Christ the Savior to make way for the Palace of the Soviets. We do not want the County evidencing that mentality.
