Hey, off topic a little bit, but still kind of relevant because of inflation -- do y'all have Harbor Freight stores up there in Hoosierville? They just opened a new one in the town near me. I walked the whole store a few days ago. Lots of cheap Chinese junk, but some of the stuff didn't look too bad from cost/benefit ratio standpoint. I bought a large aluminum roofing square and a 5-pack of those cheap cowhide palm gloves -- same ones that cost 2x at Lowe's.

Apropos nothing, I have never seen, much less bought a 5-pack of leather work gloves.

We just got a Northern Tool joint recently, but I've not been there, It's on the other side of town near IN3 & I69. The only time I get over that way is when I need to go to Gordon's Food Service or Costco, which is once in a blue moon.

Back when I was pretending to be a building contractor, I used to spend a lot of time at HFT, usually to get some one-time tool that I'd never use again for $40 rather than 200. It was just the cost of doing business. The last time I was there I was there was probably August to get a buddy a halfway decent (low-usage) 100' airhose after I showed up on weekend and he had a bunch of those crap-ass plastic coily hoses daisy-chaind together. This was a man of means, but he has the "just make it happen" mindset going on.

It adds up. Used to be that that HFT would send out flyers all the time with a 20% off coupon all the time (the discount would carry over to multiple quantities of the same item).

I'm with you. Most of the tools I own I bought to do a specific job (roofing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, automotive, etc.) and the money I saved by not hiring a contractor to do it easily paid for the tools. Same for several of the electronic instruments I use in my consulting business.

When I occasionally buy a tool just because it would be nice to have, I usually end up thinking "How did I ever get along without this thing?"

My favorite uncle who died two years ago LOVED Harbor Frieght. He would get a free item every week or month or visit or whatever -- I'm not sure what the deal was. When we worked for State of Illinois doing highway maintenance, in winter we would get an extra large pair of White Mule work gloves. Then we would wear a pair of Jersey gloves under those. It was good thermal protection in winter when you were filling pot holes for extended periods of time.

I can't really describe it, but it would function as a medium slotted/phillips and if you reversed the shaft, it was a larger set. If the bits were out of the shaft, it could be used as a 1/4 or 5/16 nut driver. An HVAC guy's dream.

OK I had a new one laying around in my garage. It's called a Pittsburg 4-in-one screwdriver (actually 6 in 1). I love them. The only problem is that the soft grip handle has a bunch of little nubs to improve grip that quickly rub off once exposed to real-world conditions. Hell, it's a tool, not a dildo. I keep them all over including Weyland Yutani one (Whiskey-Yankee-Charlie one). C is for Corp. My fake business cards are cool as hell.
