Elon Musk has proposed to President Donald Trump the idea of a 'DOGE Dividend', which involves distributing $5,000 checks to American taxpayers. This proposal aims to use the savings from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative led by Musk to reduce government waste. While the concept has sparked interest and speculation across social media, no formal decision has been made on its implementation.

Never happen. We have a $2 trillion budget deficit to take care of first. Maybe in 4 years.

Yes, the political impact against D's would be enormous, but the more serious effect, perhaps what Musk is looking for, is it would get Americans excited about cutting gov waste as they'd expect more such "dividends" as further rewards.
That benefit could well be worth the initial cost.

I would be stupid not to cash a $5000 check, but I would be naive if I thought it was some sort of refund.

To the contrary, I'd expect it to be taxable in the following year.

CONgress has the power to erase the national debt in one fell swoop by authorizing a bill which will pay it by minting one coin with that value attached to it. But not one of them has the guts to do it. ;)
